Chinese Qing Dynasty Kingfisher Feather Inlay Hairpins. Metal hairpin with blue kingfisher feathers.

Kingfisher hairpins, or tian-tsui (literally "dotting with kingfisher"), are exquisite traditional Chinese ornaments that feature iridescent blue feathers from the kingfisher bird inlaid into gold or silver settings. Popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties, these delicate accessories were prized for their vivid, almost otherworldly luster, which no enamel or gemstone could replicate. The technique involved painstakingly cutting and applying tiny pieces of feather to create intricate floral, phoenix, or butterfly motifs, often worn by aristocratic women for weddings, ceremonies, or court appearances. While breathtakingly beautiful, these adornments also came at a cost—both in the labor-intensive craftsmanship and the toll on kingfisher populations, making them rare and culturally complex artifacts today.
