Bird-and-flower painting, called Huaniaohua in Chinese, is a specific genre of Chinese painting with a long tradition spanning several dynasties, and is still considered one of the treasures of Chinese culture. Huaniaohua originated in the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), gaining in popularity and maturing significantly during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. The most stunning examples come from the Song Dynasty, fully reaching its peak right before it went underground during the Mongol-led Yuan Dynasty. Although it experienced a revival in the Ming Dynasty and has remained popular in every following era, by that time the style had impacted other countries in East Asia and became significantly less rare. The influence spread as far as Iran, where it can be seen in Iranian paintings of the golomorgh illustrations for book covers and illuminated manuscripts. Today, the images are indelibly linked with the Chinese landscape, particularly thanks to modern artists like Qi Baishi (January 1864 - September 1957), suggesting in tranquil Naturalism the quiet elegance and spirituality of the ancient nation.
