Chinese Painting, Ink and Color on Silk. Inscribed with kanji "Ling" vertically upper left. Tag on back includes framing information. Depicts a small hut on an isthmus with mountains in the distance.

Silk banners and hanging scroll paintings have been discovered dating back to the Han Dynasty (260 BCE-220 CE). Artists such as Ike no Gyokuran (1728-1784) sought to capture the vastness of the land and humanity’s place within it in a tranquil, minute way, usually without visible figures and instead a small building or monument to indicate scale. 20th Century artists like Wang Hui (B 1943) have continued this tradition, and this piece is a beautiful example of the style.
