Chinese fishbowls, the large, ornate ceramic vessels traditionally used to house ornamental fish, are a striking blend of utility and artistry. Originating during the Ming dynasty and often crafted from porcelain or glazed stoneware, these bowls are typically wide and deep, with thick walls and vividly painted surfaces featuring motifs such as dragons, lotus flowers, koi, or aquatic scenes. While they were originally used for keeping live fish—especially goldfish, which symbolize wealth and prosperity—they also became popular as decorative planters or indoor accent pieces in both Chinese homes and Western interiors influenced by Orientalist design. Their impressive size, brilliant glazes, and intricate hand-painted details make them not just functional containers but enduring symbols of abundance, harmony, and refined craftsmanship.
