Mille Fleurs (also known as millefleur, millefleurs, or mille-fleur) is a distinct term within a genre of decoration known for its usage of flowers in abundance. The words translate literally to “thousand flowers,” and these designs are often seen on Chinese porcelain as well as in glassworks, where it is better known as Millefiori. A closely related term, Famille Rose (or Jaune, Verte, or Noir), refers to a style of porcelain decorated with opaque overglaze enamels, typically featuring pink, white, yellow, and green colors. While all mille fleurs designs are in the famille designation, not all famille categories are mille fleurs, as the mille fleurs style is specifically characterized by an intensely dense arrangement of numerous, small, colorful flowers and foliage, and famille terminology is more focused on color quality than flower quantity.
