This is a Chinese gouache which depicts festivities for the Chinese New Year, which is a fifteen day celebration that usually takes place between January 21 and February 20. Children are celebrating with flags and musical instruments, like cymbals and drums, and they are manipulating kites and paper cut-outs of a fish and rooster in the bottom right. In the center there is a lion dance, which is supposed to bring good luck and fortune. The green lion is associated with the province of Fujian and the Hokkien-speaking people and has a distinctly round flat mask. The gouache is signed or titled in the upper left. The overall size is 22 1/8 x 28 1/8 in. wide and the sight size is 14 1/4 x 20 1/2 in. wide.
