This is a Chinese gouache which depicts festivities for the harvest season, which usually take place around the Autumn Equinox (September 23). Children are celebrating with flags and musical instruments, like cymbals and drums, and they are holding kites and pinwheels. On the right a float is entering the scene. In the center is a dragon dance, which is supposed to bring good luck, and the longer the dragon, the more luck it brings. The dragon represents the river spirit,
and green is sometimes the main color because it symbolizes a great harvest. The gouache is signed or titled in the red banner above the cymbals. The overall size is 29 1/2 x 23 3/4 in. wide and the sight size is 21 x 15 1/8 in. wide. Provenance: the Hirsch estate.
