The varada mudra, often called the “gesture of giving” or “gesture of compassion,” is a symbolic hand position in Buddhist art that represents charity, benevolence, and the granting of wishes. Depicted with the palm open and facing outward, usually with fingers pointing downward, it conveys the act of offering blessings, forgiveness, or protection to devotees. Commonly associated with deities such as the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (Guanyin in Chinese tradition), the varada mudra emphasizes the Buddha’s role as a benefactor who responds to the needs of sentient beings. In sculpture and painting, it is frequently paired with other mudras on the opposite hand, reinforcing the balance between compassion, wisdom, and spiritual power.
