Chinese cloisonné is a traditional decorative art form in which metal objects—usually made of copper or bronze—are embellished with colored enamel separated by thin metal wires that form intricate patterns. The term “cloisonné” comes from the French word cloison, meaning “partition,” referring to the delicate wire partitions that create small compartments filled with powdered enamel paste. After the enamel is applied, the object is fired in a kiln so the enamel melts and hardens, then it is polished and often gilded. Cloisonné became especially prominent in China during the Ming dynasty, particularly under the Xuande and Jingtai emperors in the 15th century, when artisans produced vividly colored vases, bowls, incense burners, and decorative objects featuring motifs such as dragons, lotus flowers, and clouds. The technique requires exceptional precision and craftsmanship, and Chinese cloisonné remains valued today both as a cultural heritage craft and as a form of fine decorative art.
