Chinese brush pots, known as bitong, are cylindrical containers traditionally used by scholars to hold brushes for calligraphy and painting. Often crafted from materials such as bamboo, wood, porcelain, or jade, these pots became both functional and decorative objects, reflecting the tastes, status, and scholarly pursuits of their owners. Many are intricately carved, painted, or inlaid with motifs drawn from nature, mythology, or classical literature, serving as miniature canvases that showcase artistry and craftsmanship. Popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties, brush pots were integral to the scholar’s studio, embodying the Confucian ideals of learning, refinement, and aesthetic appreciation, and remain highly collectible examples of Chinese decorative art today.
