The abhaya mudra is a symbolic hand gesture in Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain art that represents fearlessness, protection, and peace. The term comes from Sanskrit—abhaya meaning "fearlessness" and mudra meaning "gesture" or "seal." In this mudra, the right hand is raised to shoulder height with the palm facing outward and fingers extended, while the left hand may rest by the side or hold another mudra or object, depending on the deity or context. It is commonly associated with the Buddha and other enlightened beings as a sign of reassurance and benevolence, often depicted in scenes where the figure is calming followers or offering divine protection. The gesture signifies the spiritual power to dispel fear and offer safety, reflecting compassion and the absence of aggression. In artistic representations, it is both a visual metaphor and a spiritual message: "Do not fear."
