Budai, often called the Laughing Buddha or Hotei, is a popular figure in East Asian Buddhist tradition. He is depicted as a cheerful, bald monk with a large belly, a broad smile, and a cloth sack that symbolizes abundance, contentment, and generosity. Although not the historical Buddha, Budai is believed in some traditions to be an incarnation of Maitreya, the future Buddha who will appear in a distant age. His image is widely used in homes, temples, and businesses as a symbol of happiness, prosperity, good fortune, and the ability to remain joyful despite life’s challenges.
