Chinese Bronze Incense Burner Censer with Foo Dog Finial. Hammered bronze censer with body decorated in relief by pheasants or phoenix in flight. Topped with foo dog finial. Standing on three raised feet. Maker's mark impressed on base.

Size: 8 x 7 1/2 x 14 1/2 in. 

 

Chinese censers are decorative and functional objects traditionally used in Chinese culture for burning incense during religious, spiritual, or ceremonial practices. Typically made from materials like bronze, porcelain, or jade, censers come in a variety of shapes, with many featuring intricate designs such as dragons, phoenixes, or auspicious symbols. They are often raised on tripod legs and have a lidded top, allowing smoke to escape in delicate wisps. The use of censers dates back to ancient China, where incense was burned as a way to purify the air, honor ancestors, or invoke spiritual presence. In addition to their ritual significance, censers were also prized as artistic pieces, with many being exquisitely crafted and sometimes enameled or gilt, particularly during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Their design and symbolism varied depending on the occasion—whether it be a Buddhist, Taoist, or Confucian rite—making them an essential part of Chinese cultural and religious life.
