The earth-touching Buddha, also known as the Bhumisparsha Mudra Buddha, represents the moment when Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. In this posture, the Buddha is seated in meditation with his left hand resting in his lap and his right hand reaching down to touch the earth. According to Buddhist tradition, when challenged by the forces of temptation and doubt, he called the Earth to witness his countless good deeds and his right to attain enlightenment. The Earth responded in his favor, and he achieved complete awakening. This gesture symbolizes determination, spiritual victory, inner strength, and the triumph of wisdom over ignorance, making it one of the most important and widely recognized images in Buddhist art.
