Chinese Bronze Buddha. Bronze seated Buddha statue depicted in a meditative pose with a circular halo, resting on a pedestal flanked by two small lion figures.
size: 6 x 3/4 x 8 in.
Seated Buddha figures are among the most iconic forms of Buddhist art, representing the Buddha in meditation, teaching, or enlightenment. Typically shown cross-legged in the lotus position, these sculptures emphasize serenity, balance, and spiritual focus, often with symbolic hand gestures (mudras) such as the dhyana mudra (meditation) or bhumisparsha mudra (calling the earth to witness). Early examples from the Gandhara region blend Hellenistic realism with Buddhist symbolism, while later masterpieces from the Gupta Empire refined a smooth, idealized style that influenced much of Asia. Monumental seated Buddhas, such as those at Leshan Giant Buddha and Todai-ji, demonstrate both devotional purpose and technical achievement. Across cultures—from India to China, Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia—seated Buddha figures serve not only as objects of worship but also as visual expressions of inner peace and enlightenment.
