Slip-decorated porcelain refers to ceramic wares embellished with liquid clay, or slip, which is applied to the surface before firing to create contrasting patterns, textures, or pictorial designs. This technique allows artisans to paint, trail, or stencil decorative motifs ranging from simple geometric forms to elaborate floral and figural imagery, often in white or colored slips that stand out against the porcelain body. Originating in China and later adopted by European potteries in the 17th and 18th centuries, slip decoration provided both an economical and artistic means of enriching porcelain surfaces before the widespread use of overglaze enamels. Collectors value these pieces for their tactile charm and the distinctive, sometimes spontaneous quality that slip application imparts to otherwise refined porcelain forms.
