She is holding a lotus leaf and bud—symbol of purity arising from muck. Her nipples are visible, which is highly unusual. It
may reflect Guanyin’s history: In India, where Guanyin originated, she was the compassionate male bodhisattva
(Avalokitesvara) who could manifest in various forms: any age or gender, human or non-human. This accounts for the
variability of her forms after arriving in different cultures. When first arriving In China in the Sui and Tang dynasties (581-
907), she was male; became androgynous in the Song dynasty (960-1279), and all female thereafter—even though she
remains almost universally flat-chested in Chinese representations.
