Charles Conder, His Life and Works, Gibson 1914. This book is titled “Charles Conder, His Life And Works, By Frank Gibson, With A Catalogue Of The Lithographs And Etchings By Campbell Dodgson, M.A., Keeper Of Prints And Drawings, British Museum, With One-Hundred & Twenty-One Illustrations,” The book was published in London by John Lane at The Bodley Head, in New York by John Lane Company, and in Toronto by Bell & Cockburn in MCMXIV [1914]. The book is a first edition, with gilt lettering on the spine, a floral decorated buckram cover with gilt lettering, floral decorated endpapers, a sepia colored frontispiece of Charles Conder, the title page, a three-page preface, 110 pages of text, 107 plates in addition to the other illustrations, a seven-page Index, and the top edge is gilt. The book is an important monograph on the artist and it almost feels like a catalogue de raisonne. Conder (1868 -1909) was an English-born painter, lithographer and designer who emigrated to Australia in 1888 and was a key figure in the Heidelberg School, arguably beginning a distinctively Australian tradition in Western art. He returned to Europe and Paris in 1890, where he became involved with Aestheticism and mixed with leading artists and writers of the day, such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Oscar Wilde and Aubrey Beardsley. Conder made a specialty of painting on silk, but spent the last year of his life in a sanatorium and died from syphilis. The book is 4to. and measures 11 1/2 x 9 1/8 in. wide, the binding is tight and the pages are pretty clean, with occasional brown spots, and the endpapers have brown spots as well. The crown and heel have very light bumps, and overall, an attractive book about an artist with a bohemian lifestyle and a flair for the avant garde. #215 #1552
