Chang Shu-chi (1900–1957), also known as Zhang Shuqi, was a Chinese painter renowned for his exquisite depictions of birds and flowers. Born in Zhejiang province, he studied under the esteemed Liu Haisu in Shanghai, where he was trained in both traditional Chinese brush techniques and Western painting methods. This fusion of styles became a hallmark of his work, which gained international acclaim. In the early 1940s, during the Second Sino-Japanese War, Chang traveled to the United States as part of a cultural exchange initiative aimed at fostering Sino-American relations. His exhibitions in cities like Los Angeles and Ann Arbor introduced American audiences to Chinese brush painting, significantly influencing the appreciation of Chinese art in the West. Chang's works are held in prestigious collections, including the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the Ashmolean Museum, and Stanford University.
