The Pamiris are an Eastern Iranian ethnic group native to Central Asia, living primarily in Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, and China. They speak a variety of different languages, and likely emerged from tribes that inhabited the Pamir Mountains between the 7th and 2nd Centuries B.C. Their Pre-Islamic beliefs slowly merged with the new faiths as their languages evolved simultaneously, and due to their nomadic tendencies and fierce resistance to assimilation it wasn’t until the 1930s before Pamiri intellectuals tried to create a written alphabet for themselves. Despite centuries of persecution and isolation, today they are best known for their textiles and extravagant headdresses and remain the subject of much scholarly debate due to retaining traits abandoned by most civilizations since before the Dark Ages.
