Celine Baekeland (1868-1957) was a Belgian-born American painter, illustrator, and arts advocate known for her landscape, coastal, and still-life paintings. Born Celine Swarts in Ghent, Belgium, she immigrated to the United States after marrying Leo Baekeland, the inventor of Bakelite. An accomplished artist in her own right, she exhibited widely and was selected in 1938 to show her work at the Studio Guild of New York alongside prominent American painters. Beyond her artistic career, Baekeland was a co-founder of the Prospect Settlement House in Yonkers, New York, where she promoted arts education for children of working families. Later residing in Coconut Grove, Florida, she remained active in artistic circles until her death, earning recognition for both her creative work and her dedication to community arts education.
