Cawnpore, Sir George Trevelyan 1894. This book is titled “Cawnpore” by The Right Hon. Sir George Trevelyan, it was published in 1894 in London by Macmillan and Co. Limited and in New York by The Macmillan Co. and printed by R. Clay in London and Bungay. The book is about the Indian rebellion of 1857, which was a checkered history for Great Britain. Parts of India were run by the East India Company, an English and British company founded in 1600 to profit from trade in the Indian Ocean region, initially with India and East Asia, and later with Southeast Asia and Hong Kong. At its peak, the company was the largest corporation in the world; it even had its own armed forces, about 260,000 soldiers, twice the size of the British army at the time, and some Indian groups got fed up with being run by foreigners. The rebellion centered around Cawnpore (now Kanpur), a large garrison town in India that was besieged by Indian forces in 1857. The East India Company was unprepared for the siege, they surrendered to the rebel forces, and when the city was evacuated, it turned into a massacre. About 900 civilians and 300 British soldiers were killed, and 120 British woman and children were killed and their bodies thrown down a well, some of them buried alive, as an attempt to hide the evidence. Cawnpore was recaptured a while later, and after the East India Company discovered the bodies in the well, they retaliated against captured rebel soldiers and local civilians. It was a violent episode that started because of foreign rule, it involved treachery and sepoy Indian soldiers loyal to the British turning against the masters, and the resulting massacres and revenge and retaliation, and the British forces chose poor defense positions that cost many lives. The book was first published in 1865 and recounts all this, and this is the fourth edition of the events that led up to the massacre and the aftermath. The book has gilt lettering on the spine, dark blue covers, dark endpapers, the half-title followed by the title page, a copyright page which lists the printing dates for the various editions, a two-page Preface, one page of Contents (the Station, the Outbreak, The Siege, the Treachery, the Massacre), 280 pages of text, and the edges are deckled. The book is 8vo. and measures 7 5/8 x 5 1/2 in. wide, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, faded gilt on the spine, wear at the gutters, light browning on the half-title, a small tear at the bottom of the first page of text, bumps on the spine and along the edges of the boards, specks of rubbing at the heel and crown and at the tips, and an important book about a gruesome chapter in British and Indian relations. #197 #1565
