This lithograph titled "I Saltimbanchi" by Carlo Carra was signed by the artist and dated 1922, it is unnumbered, but stamped "Weimar Staat" by the publisher in the lower left corner, which stands for "Weimar Staatliches Bauhaus", and the title means "The Acrobats". Carra (1881 - 1966) was an Italian painter and a leading figure of the Futurist movement in Italy at the beginning of the 20th century. The Futurist movement emphasized dynamism, speed, youth, and violence; it influenced Art Deco, Surrealism, and Dada, and Carra's Futurist phase ended around the time that World War I began. The Staatliches Bauhaus, commonly known as the Bauhaus (German for 'building house'), was the state art school in Weimar that combined crafts and the fine arts. Founded in 1919 by by German architect Walter Gropius (1883-1969), the school became famous for its approach to design, which attempted to unify individual artistic vision with the principles of mass production and an emphasis on function. The Bauhaus style later became one of the most influential currents in modern design, modernist architecture, and architectural education, and staff at the Bauhaus included prominent artists such as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and László Moholy-Nagy, among others. A lithograph with the same title and same Weimar imprint is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and it is unnumbered, just like the one for auction here. The lithograph measures 15 1/4 x 10 7/8 in. wide and is in great condition. It is very clean and needs no repairs, and the signature and title in the lower left are done in pen and brown ink. Carra's works have sold for a couple of hundred dollars to several million, and this is a beautiful example of his work from the 1920's. #5100 Location U4
