#4091 .

Carla Nampeyo was born in 1961 in the village of Polacca, in the heart of the Hopi Reservation in Arizona. She is the daughter of noted potter Thomas Polacca of the Hopi-Tewa Snow Clan and a granddaughter of Fannie Nampeyo, as well as a great-granddaughter of Nampeyo of Hano, who is considered one of the most important artists in Hopi history. Her childhood was spent between Polacca and the village of Shungopavi, where her mother was from. Carla studied under her father starting in her early teens, and eventually became well known in the late 1970s for her innovative incised pottery, as well as her carved pottery that she adapted from her father’s technique. In 1980 Carla married a Navajo tribesman, the artist Raul Claw, and began to sell her work alongside his at a variety of shops and waystations throughout Arizona. She has represented the tribe in several exhibitions throughout the Southwest United States and Central America, and today she continues the tradition, constantly exploring new colors and shapes to incorporate her technique into.
