Carl Erickson (1899-1966) American, Controlled Bubble Art Glass Ashtray. Bold jade color throughout, with three curving tongue-like decorations equidistance around the top edge.

Size: 7 x 7 x 2 1/2 in.

Carl Erickson was born in 1899 in Bremen, Ohio, and learned how to make highly sought-after, heavy Scandinavian-style modernist art glass in his studio, Erickson Glass Works, which operated from 1943 until 1961. Peak production was during the 1950s, when he was best known for sommerso (cased), controlled bubble (bullicante) designs, and bold colors like amber, green, and smoke, with his hand-blown pieces considered prime examples of mid-century modern functional sculptures. He passed away in 1966.
