This is an attractive map of the voyage of Captain Cook in the Pacific Ocean near the islands of New Caledonia and Vanuatu. Captain Cook discovered the islands on his second voyage, and they included New Caledonia and several islands in the Vanuatu archipelago. Cook called Vanuatu the New Hebrides, the name that was used for the islands until the Republic of Vanuatu was established in 1980. Cook’s route through Vanuatu and around New Caledonia is traced here and there are even references to specific dates where he and his crew landed. Both island groups had been completely unknown to Europeans before Cook’s arrival in 1774. The map was created by James Cook and engraved by Robert Menard for the French edition of Cook’s voyages and published in 1778.
