The Moshulu is a historic four-masted steel barque built in 1904 by William Hamilton & Co. in Port Glasgow, Scotland, originally named Kurt for the Hamburg shipping company G.H.J. Siemers & Co. Seized by the U.S. during World War I, she was renamed Moshulu—a Seneca word meaning “one who fears nothing”—by First Lady Edith Wilson. Under Finnish ownership in the 1930s, she gained fame by winning the last grain race from Australia to Europe in 1939, a voyage chronicled by Eric Newby in The Last Grain Race. After varied uses—including as a grain storage hulk—she was restored in the 1970s and now serves as a floating restaurant at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia, making her the world’s oldest and largest square-rigged sailing vessel still afloat.
