Capodimonte porcelain is porcelain produced by the Capodimonte porcelain manufactory, founded in Naples in 1743 by King Charles VII and Queen Maria Amalia at the Palace of Capodimonte, drawing on expertise linked to the Meissen factory and artists such as Livio Ottavio Schepers, Giovanni Caselli, and Giuseppe Gricci to create refined soft-paste wares. In 1759 they moved to Madrid as the Real Fábrica del Buen Retiro when Charles became king of Spain, but its brief Neapolitan period established a reputation so strong that the Capodimonte name continues to be widely used for porcelain made in and around Naples. A second royal factory founded by Ferdinand I operated from 1771 to 1806, producing Neoclassical designs and biscuit porcelain figures before closing during the Napoleonic invasion, and since then the style and name have persisted through numerous imitations of varying quality.
