Born in the Bronx, New York in 1942, Calvin Richard Klein discovered his love for design early in life, inspired by his seamstress grandmother, and went on to study at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. After graduating in 1962 he honed his craft by apprenticing for local coat and suit manufacturers. In 1968 Klein took a major leap by launching his own namesake label, starting as a modest coat shop alongside his childhood friend and business partner, Barry Schwartz. He quickly became a dominant force in American fashion, pioneering a minimalist, clean-cut aesthetic that rejected excess in favor of elegant, comfortable sportswear. Beyond the garments themselves, Klein revolutionized global marketing through highly provocative, culture-shifting advertising campaigns that transformed basic denim and underwear into high-status sensual symbols. After selling his multi-billion-dollar empire to PVH Corp. in 2003, he has stepped back from active design, leaving behind an enduring legacy that permanently redefined modern American luxury.
