Buzz Blodgett was born Waldo L. Blodgett in 1951 in Los Angeles, California, the son of Wally Blodgett, a famous ceramic artist. In 1969 his father began studying glass blowing under Val Sanders at Palomar College, and Buzz began assisting him in their home furnace in his first summer back from studying chemistry at San Diego State University. After obtaining his B.Sc. in 1974 he went into glassmaking fulltime, working alongside his father at the newly established Blodgett Glass Company. In 1978 a Swedish designer came to work as an artist-in-residence at their facility, and his styles had a profound impact on their work, leading to new designs with bubble techniques and more ocean-themed pieces. When Wally passed away in 1987 Buzz took over the company, focusing more and more on art glass, with new pieces exhibited around the country and in many private and public collections today.
