Rama is a major deity in Hinduism, worshiped as the seventh and one of the most popular avatars of Vishnu. In Rama-centric Hindu traditions, he is considered the Supreme Being, and is often referred to as the maryada purushottam (ideal man). He is the male protagonist of the Hindu epic Ramayana, and his birthday is celebrated every year on Rama Navami. According to the Ramayana, Rama was born to Dasaratha and his first wife Kausalya in Ayodhya, the capital of the Kingdom of Kosala. Born into a royal family, Rama’s life is described in the Hindu texts as one challenged by unexpected changes, such as an exile into impoverished and difficult circumstances, and challenges of ethical questions and moral dilemmas. The entire life story of Rama, his beloved wife Sita, and their companions in fighting against the evil Demon-king Ravana allegorically discusses duties, rights and social responsibilities of all individuals. It quintessentially illustrates dharma and dharmic living through model characters, akin to Christian allegories like The Pilgrim’s Progress.
