British Princess Mary Christmas 1914 Brass Tobacco Tin Gift Box. This embossed brass tin was a Christmas present for British soldiers, sailors, and nurses serving during World War I, funded by a public appeal organized by Princess Mary, daughter of King George V. The tins were designed to contain various items, such as tobacco, cigarettes, a pipe, a Christmas card, and a photograph of the King and Queen. Each one was designed with the image of Mary in center, bookended by an ornate "M" on either side, and surrounded by the words "Imperium Britannicum" and "Christmas 1914" along with the names of Britain's allies at the time: Belgium, France, Japan, Montenegro, Russia, and Servia (the archaic spelling of Serbia).
