Brass Tavern Style Electric Candle Chandelier. A wheel hangs from four beams that can be adjusted by removing an upper section if desired, with six electric candles mounted in cupped candleholders on the wheel. The style pays homage to the wheel or crown shaped chandeliers that appeared throughout Europe during the Medieval period, almost ubiquitous in taverns, from which the name is taken.

Chandeliers are a variation of candelabras (multi-candle holding devices) that are specifically hung from ceilings. The word first appeared in the English language as it is used today in 1736, borrowed from the French word for candleholder, while the French use the word “lustre” to refer to the object. However, hanging lighting devices were in use since ancient times, with circular ceramic lamps and with multiple points for wicks or candles surviving from the Roman period. The 6th Century Byzantine polycandelon, a flat circular metallic structure suspended by chains that held oil lamps, is the earliest example of the modern chandelier, in a style virtually unchanged for centuries until the rapid expansion of the middle and merchant classes around the world in the aftermath of the Renaissance led to widespread proliferation and variation. Today, electric chandeliers are common in homes across the globe, although candle and oil chandeliers can still be found in some churches and other venues as a distinct aesthetic taste, beloved for their ambience.
