Blanche Brody was born in Orinda, California in 1925. She received a Bachelors of Science and a Masters of Education from Hunter College in child psychology, but her work with children introduced her to art and she wound up leaving the field to study art at the California College of Arts and Crafts as well as the San Francisco Art Institute. In 1964 she was invited to the Biennale de Vichy, France, where she received the “diplome d’honneur.” Her style evolved into figure studies and heavily contrasting and abstracted landscapes, playing with color and light to indicate people and their surroundings rather than directly addressing them. As part of the “Bay Area Figurative School,” she was heavily influenced by Joan Brown. Her one-woman shows and annual exhibits have continued throughout the past fifty years, with her work found in private collections and museums around the Bay Area.
