Billy Al Bengston (1934-2022) was an American painter and sculptor whose work helped define the postwar Los Angeles art scene through its bold fusion of Pop art, West Coast culture, and industrial materials. Born in Dodge City, Kansas, he moved to Southern California as a teenager and studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts and the Otis Art Institute. A founding artist of the influential Ferus Gallery circle, Bengston became renowned for his innovative use of sprayed automotive lacquer, inspired by custom motorcycles, hot rods, and surf culture, creating luminous abstract paintings featuring his signature chevron and mandala-like motifs. His groundbreaking work blurred the boundaries between fine art and California's popular visual culture, earning him international recognition and placement in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
