Bill Mack (Born 1944) American, Framed Bronze and Resin Einstein Portrait Sculpture. Depicting the genius in large scale and extreme likeness, holding a pipe to his lips, framed as if a painting. The three-dimensional piece has a bronze and resin composition with a lacquered surface, making it less heavy than a fully-bronze sculpture (though still pretty heavy). Signed and numbered 84/120 bottom left. Two labels on the back of the frame, one warning not to hang with wire, the other giving a detailed explanation of the materials used to make the piece and the proper care and displaying of it.
Size: 48 x 40 x 8 in.
Bill Mack was born on September 25th, 1944 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As a child he developed an interest in painting and sculpture, eventually working as a freelance artist before he even finished high school. He attended the University of Minnesota with a major in journalism and a minor in art history. In his senior year he began to experiment with making full-round artworks and painted relief sculptures, and after a highly successful gallery showing in St. Paul he opened his own studio, making life-size cast bronze sculptures for the Minnesota Twins’ Target Field, Hazeltine National Golf Club, and several Midwestern corporate executive headquarters. In the 1990s he was selected to craft pieces exclusively for Sports Hall of Fames throughout the country after his work for the Twins gained national attention, with some of his most recognizable works being Kareen Abdul-Jabbar for the NBA, Harmon Killebrew for baseball, Peggy Fleming for figure skating, and Arthur Ashe for tennis. He also designed the Hobey Baker Award for the Canadian and U.S. Hockey Halls of Fame, and was instrumental in organizing a campaign to save and restore the original H from the Hollywood sign that had been abandoned in 1978, a project that took five years to complete. He continues to work today from his home in Minnesota making portraits for sale through galleries like Park West, as well as unique commissions for public, private, and corporate collections around the world.
