Bill Hutson (1936–2022) was an African American abstract painter and educator known for his distinctive approach to abstraction, often incorporating found materials and cultural references into his work. Born in San Marcos, Texas, Hutson began his artistic journey in his teens through a correspondence course in drawing. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he moved to San Francisco, where he immersed himself in the art scene, studying briefly at the San Francisco Academy of Art and assisting artist Frank N. Ashley. In the 1960s, Hutson relocated to Europe, living in cities such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, and Ibadan, Nigeria. His travels exposed him to influential abstractionists and sparked an interest in African philosophy, themes that often permeated his artwork. Throughout his career, Hutson exhibited internationally and received several accolades, including a National Endowment for the Arts award in 1974. He taught at various institutions, including Ohio State University, Johns Hopkins University, and Franklin & Marshall College, where he served as the Jennie Brown Cook and Betsy Hess Cook Distinguished Artist-in-Residence until his passing. Despite being declared legally blind in 2000 due to glaucoma, Hutson continued to create art. His work is held in several prominent collections, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Schomburg Center, and the Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin & Marshall College.
