Bill Gregg was born in California in the early 20th Century and spent nearly his whole life there, primarily in Marin County. He spent much of his youth exploring the scenic harbors and waterfronts of Sausalito and Tiburon, which profoundly influenced his work. He began painting at an early age and studied art at California State University at Northridge. He worked for Sports Afield Magazine in the 1940s and 50s, producing colorful stylized artwork for them and other sports and men's lifestyle magazines. In the 1960s he traveled to Mexico, where he studied further at the Institute Allende. In his later years he turned to painting landscapes and less stylized works, living and painting from his home studio in the San Francisco Bay Area since the 1970s.
