Bill Campbell was born in Flint, Michigan in 1935. After graduating high school and going straight to work in a local factory, he was exposed to pottery by his future wife Jane and quit industrial work to take classes at Virginia Commonwealth University, before they both transferred to University of Pennsylvania in Edinboro. After graduating with a BFA at the age of 36 he married Jane and they spent many years saving up to create their own studio, eventually setting up in an abandoned powerhouse in nearby Cambridge Springs in 1979, where they have lived ever since. Campbell is known around the country for his distinctive blue glaze and the unique crystalline formations in it, which he calls the “Stellar Series” and has frequently referred to as his “demanding mistress,” indicating the highly specific and precise methods needed to create them. He opened his own store in 1991, but the studio and store both closed in June 2021 as he and Jane were forced to retire due to the physical and economic effects of COVID-19.
