Ben Shahn was a Lithuanian-born American painter, photographer, muralist, and graphic artist whose work became a powerful voice for social justice in twentieth-century America. After immigrating to New York as a child, he trained as a lithographer and developed a distinctive style that combined realism with expressive line work and strong political engagement. Shahn gained national recognition through his series on the Sacco and Vanzetti trial and later documented the hardships of the Great Depression while working for New Deal agencies, including the Farm Security Administration. Throughout his career, he created paintings, photographs, posters, and murals that championed workers, immigrants, and marginalized communities, making him one of the leading figures of American Social Realism. His art remains admired for its humanism, moral conviction, and enduring concern with civil rights and social inequality.
