Ben W. Essenburg was born in Oak Park, Illinois on July 26th, 1947. He received a B.A. in English Literature from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and in 1970 moved to South Florida to teach, where he first encountered the lush landscape that inspired him to begin painting. Settling in Englewood with his wife Jill and four children, he became a phenomenally successful self-taught artist, painting and exhibiting professionally since 1975. He participated in nearly every major Art Festival in Florida, receiving numerous awards over the years for his vibrant and life-like renderings of wildlife in the Everglades. His work is included in private and corporate collections throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and South America, and has been featured in a number of magazines, with prints of his pieces used to promote environmental and tourism initiatives under a number of governors. A passionate advocate for wildlife preservation and arts education, he passed away on March 6th, 2018 in his home studio.
