Signed bottom right. Label on back of gilt frame from the Society of Washington Artists, dated 1922, with faded writing on it. Another label from Ford Art & Antiques in Sarasota, Florida taped above it.

Bayard Henry Tyler was born in 1855 in Oneida, New York. After attending the Whitestown Seminary and Syracuse University he became a student of the National Academy of Design, studying under Theodore Kaufmann and Willian Merritt Chase. He settled in Yonkers, where he married a fellow artist named Charlotte Wiltsie in 1883 with whom he had two daughters. He was a member of the Art Students League of New York as well as the Lotos Club, the Salmagundi Club, and the New York Watercolor Society. Today his celebrated Hudson River landscape and impressionist portraits are found in collections around the country, and were exhibited by the Washington Society of Artists, the Yonkers Art Association, and at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. throughout his lifetime, right up until his death after a brief illness in 1931.
