Barry Marshall was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1946. From an early age he was exposed to the art being created by the many plein air painters in the Cape Ann area, taking up the brush himself alongside them in Rockport in his late teens. His fascination with the technique led him to California to study the style of the early California plein air painters, creating a mixture of strong brush work and glazes to capture the contrasting luminescence of the sky and the energy of the sea. He enrolled at Cabrillo College, then finished his BA at Orange Coast College in 1969. A friend suggested that he explore landscape painting at the Denver Art Students League, where he began to favor acrylics and worked on utilizing them to appear like regular oils. After traveling extensively he wound up back in Gloucester in the 1980s, where he studied with seascape artist Robert Nally and portraitist Helen Van Wyck. By this time he was filling galleries with exhibitions on both coasts, and eventually returned to California, settling in Pacific Grove to capture the Monterey area after further studies with David Curtis, Paul Lavallee, and Charles Vickery. He opened the Barry Marshall studio and gallery in 2002, but eventually moved to Fort Bragg in 2023 to escape the ever-increasing congestion of Pacific Grove and Carmel. He brought with him many of his paintings of the Monterey Peninsula and is now currently capturing the beauty of the Mendocino coast. His acrylic paintings are considered prime examples of the form, indistinguishable from oil paintings as a result of the “wet-on-wet” technique he developed. He became the first solo featured artist of the year at Cloud Nine Gallery in 2024, and his work is in countless private collections around California.
