Balthasar van den Bossche (1681–1715) Flemish, Oil on Canvas Baroque Genre Painting. Antique oil on canvas genre painting, Man Examining a Bottle of Urine, a satirical composition depicting a quack doctor doing precisely that.

Balthasar van den Bossche (1681–1715) was a Flemish Baroque painter known for his elegant and meticulously detailed genre scenes, particularly depictions of artists’ studios, collectors’ galleries, and refined domestic interiors. Born in Antwerp, he became a master in the Guild of Saint Luke in 1697 and studied under Gerard Thomas. Van den Bossche spent time in Paris, where he absorbed French artistic influences before returning to Antwerp around 1700. His compositions often feature well-dressed figures engaged in intellectual or cultural pursuits, framed by rich settings that reflect the tastes and values of the rising bourgeois class. He occasionally collaborated with other painters, such as Pieter van Bloemen, to incorporate animals and landscape elements into his scenes. Despite his early death at the age of 34, his work remains a vivid reflection of early 18th-century artistic life and society.
