Founded in San Sebastián in 1919 by legendary couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga, the eponymous Spanish luxury fashion house later relocated to Paris during the Spanish Civil War. In the post-war era, Balenciaga achieved immediate international acclaim by pioneering revolutionary, avant-garde silhouettes for women, such as the tunic dress, balloon jacket, and cocoon coat. The famously defiant founder operated outside the traditional fashion establishment and media schedules to prevent design piracy until closing the house in 1968. After a period of dormancy following the founder’s death, the brand was successfully revived in 1986 by the Jacques Bogart fragrance group and was eventually acquired by the luxury conglomerate Kering in 2001. Under a succession of influential creative directors, including Nicolas Ghesquière, the brand introduced iconic products like the Motorcycle bag and solidified its reputation for future-forward, advanced structural ready-to-wear. Most recently, following a period of massive commercial growth, the historic house entered a new era with the high-profile appointments of CEO Gianfranco Gianangeli and Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli.
