In 1890 Dutch immigrant Siebe Baker founded an interior woodwork company in Allegan, Michigan, and his son Hollis S. Baker joined the firm in 1910, eventually taking over as president and introducing influential Art Deco and modern furniture collaborations that defined the American movement. During the Great Depression the company pioneered the first major historical reproduction program in the United States, including the highly popular Manor House and Chinese Modern collections. The brand continued its creative expansion after World War II through collaborations with designers like Finn Juhl and the establishment of a massive private furniture museum. Following Hollis S. Baker's death in 1961, his son Hollis M. Baker further diversified the company into the luxury market and expanded manufacturing into North Carolina. After a 1972 merger created the wholesale giant Baker, Knapp & Tubbs, the firm was acquired in 1986 by the Kohler Company. Today, Baker Furniture remains a global leader in the industry, maintaining international showrooms and a reputation for high-end design despite economic setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
