August Friedrich Albrecht Schenck (1828–1901) was a German-born painter renowned for his emotive landscapes and animal subjects, particularly sheep, which he often used as metaphors for human emotions and societal themes. Born in Glückstadt, Holstein (then under Danish control), Schenck initially pursued a mercantile career before studying under Léon Cogniet at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He became a naturalized French citizen and spent most of his career in France, regularly exhibiting at the Paris Salons. His most famous work, Anguish (c. 1878), depicts a ewe mourning her lamb amidst a bleak, snowy landscape, surrounded by ominous crows—a poignant representation of grief and vulnerability. Schenck's paintings were widely collected during his lifetime, and he was honored with several awards, including the Legion of Honour in 1885. He passed away in Écouen, near Paris, where his legacy endures through his evocative artworks and the street named in his honor.
