Attributed to Shoji Hamada (1894-1978) Japanese, Ceramic Yunomi Tea Cup. Unsigned, but likely produced by him in the 1960s, using yubigaki ("finger wipe glaze"), a deliberate technique of sweeping a finger through wet glaze on an unfired pot. This sweeping motion displaces the glaze, revealing the contrasting clay body underneath or creating an intentional, rustic streak and textural pattern.
Size: 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 3 1/4 in.
A yunomi is a traditional, handleless Japanese teacup typically used for everyday, informal drinking of steeped teas like sencha or hōjicha. Emerging during the Edo Period (1603-1868), they were designed as casual alternatives to the formal chawan (tea bowls) used in Zen-inspired tea ceremonies.
