Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) was a groundbreaking French painter and a leading figure in the Realist movement, known for rejecting academic conventions and romantic idealism in favor of depicting the world with unflinching honesty. Born in Ornans, France, Courbet gained prominence in the 1840s and 1850s with works like The Stone Breakers and A Burial at Ornans, which elevated ordinary people and rural laborers to the scale traditionally reserved for historical or religious subjects. His bold, earthy brushwork and political convictions challenged the art establishment and reflected his commitment to social realism. Courbet’s defiant stance extended beyond the canvas; he was involved in revolutionary politics and faced imprisonment for his role in the Paris Commune. Later exiled to Switzerland, he continued to paint landscapes and self-portraits until his death, leaving a lasting impact on modern art through his insistence that artists must be of their time and depict reality as they see it.
