Giovanni Paolo Panini (1691–1765) was an Italian painter and architect best known for his masterful vedute—detailed, idealized views of Rome's ruins, monuments, and grand interiors. Trained in architecture and perspective, Panini brought an almost theatrical flair to his canvases, skillfully blending real and imagined elements to celebrate the grandeur of classical antiquity. His paintings, often commissioned by Grand Tour patrons, featured meticulously rendered columns, arches, and temples, making him one of the most sought-after chroniclers of Rome in the 18th century. Beyond topographical works, he also painted elaborate capricci and festive court scenes, all demonstrating his expertise in perspective, composition, and architectural fantasy.
